80 is the new 70, 70 is the new 60, and 60 is the new 50… retirees want adventure, they want a change of lifestyle, and they want to enjoy an active life, that’s why each year sees more and more people of retirement age move abroad with Europe having long been the destination of choice, certainly amongst the Brits and the Americans.

So, which European country do you choose? Well, the experts at Moving to Spain have done all the research for you, and having taken into account a number of different factors which include population, life expectancy, cost of living, house prices, visas, healthcare, blue flag sites and annual sunshine hours, it turns out that Spain came in second with a retirement score of 7.31 out of 10.

Spain was a consistent high scorer in pretty much all the categories, offering low cost of living and property prices in return for a high number of sunshine hours, high number of blue flag sites and a long life expectancy. Around 19% of the population are above 65, the healthcare is ranked amongst the best in the world, and on top of all that they are only one of seven European countries to offer the retirement visa or non-lucrative visa.

Let’s just now delve further into some of those factors that contribute to Spain’s reputation as an ideal retirement haven.

Climate and Geography

One of the most compelling reasons why Spain ranks highly for retirees is its diverse climate and geography. From the balmy Mediterranean coastline to the temperate climates of the interior regions, Spain offers retirees a wide range of choices when it comes to selecting their preferred climate. The Mediterranean climate prevalent along the Costa Blanca and Murcia provides sunny days and mild winters, fostering an outdoor lifestyle that is conducive to health and wellbeing.

Cultural Richness and Lifestyle

Spain’s rich cultural heritage is another factor that draws retirees to the country. The country’s history is visible in its architecture, museums, festivals, and way of life. The leisurely pace of Spanish life is conducive to relaxation and enjoyment, offering retirees the opportunity to immerse themselves in local traditions, cuisine, and activities. The siesta culture and the importance placed on relationships and social interactions make for a fulfilling retirement experience.

Healthcare Excellence

Spain boasts a well-regarded healthcare system, which plays a pivotal role in attracting retirees. The country consistently ranks high in terms of healthcare quality, accessibility, and affordability. Retirees can access both public and private healthcare options, ensuring they receive quality medical care and attention. The World Health Organization (WHO) has ranked Spain’s healthcare system as one of the best in the world, giving retirees peace of mind about their well-being.

Affordability and Cost of Living

While certain parts of Spain, like Barcelona and Madrid, can be pricier, overall, the country offers a relatively affordable cost of living when compared to many other Western European nations. This affordability extends to housing, transportation, food, and entertainment. For retirees, this means they can enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without straining their finances.

Infrastructure and Amenities

Spain’s modern infrastructure and amenities ensure that retirees can enjoy a high quality of life. Well-maintained roads, efficient public transportation, and accessibility for those with mobility challenges make getting around easy.

Outdoor Activities

Spain’s diverse geography offers retirees a plethora of outdoor activities to engage in. From hiking and cycling, golfing and sailing or tennis and padel, to relaxing on the Mediterranean beaches, retirees can find activities that suit their interests and fitness levels. The emphasis on outdoor living and the abundance of natural beauty contribute to a healthier and more active lifestyle in retirement.

Expat Communities and Language

Spain has a strong expat community, with many retirees from various countries choosing to settle there. This creates a supportive environment for newcomers, as they can connect with like-minded individuals who share similar experiences. While Spanish is the official language, many locals, especially in tourist-heavy areas, speak English, making communication and integration smoother for retirees who may not be fluent in Spanish.

So, whether retirees seek adventure, relaxation, cultural enrichment, or social connections, Spain offers a comprehensive package that caters to a fulfilling retirement experience. If you are looking to retire, and the Costa Blanca or Murcia are your destinations of choice, please do contact us and we will be happy to assist with your move.
