Located in the Vega Baja Region and on the borders of both the Alicante & Murcia provinces the town & Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada is in a rather unique location, allowing you to experience the very best of both the Costa Blanca & the Costa Calida. Well connected to both Corvera Airport and Alicante Airport it’s become a highly popular tourist destination, many of whom choose to either buy a holiday home here or re-locate permanently.
The name ‘Pilar de la Horadada’ is said to originate from the many watch towers that were built along the 4km coastline to protect it during the incursions of the Berber Pirates, and though most of the towers have now long gone there are a few that still remain and are worth a visit, even if just from the outside.
Largely agricultural and surrounded by market gardens, citrus groves, and farms the area offers fabulous lush views, but in addition to that, the town itself is only 3km inland from some of the best beaches around, and the ideal conditions mean many of them now have the prestigious Blue Flag Status such as the beach at Higuericas, Playa El Puerto, Playa Conde, Jesuitas and Rocamar. Attractive to swimmers and watersport fanatics, there’s always plenty to see and do here including snorkelling, diving & water skiing, and given that most of the sandy beaches here have a gradual slope into the turquoise waters, they are also frequently visited by young families and less experienced swimmers.
The beaches aren’t the only attraction that Pilar de La Horadada Municipality offers though, as it’s also home to an abundance of activities which include Golf (such as the Lo Romero Golf Course), the hiking and cycle routes throughout the area (such as along the El Rio Seco), The Archaeological and Ethnological museum, Horse Riding facilities and The Roman Ruins near the El Rio beach in Mil Palmeras.
If it’s good weather you are after, then you really can’t go to too far wrong with Pilar de La Horadada, as much the rest of the Costa Blanca there’s more than 3000 hours of sunshine here, with mild winters and hot summers, so it’s a perfect destination all year round.
Due to the quality of the farms & the fisheries, it’s no surprise that you’ll find excellent gastronomy options in the area, both in the town centre and the local vicinity, including along the coastline. The Mediterranean kitchens serve up both local & international cuisine, including of course the famous Spanish Paella, and again, like many places in the Costa Blanca ingredients will usually be from the local area! Some of the top 10 restaurants here (as judged by Trip Advisor) include Casa Areaz, Meson Rio Seco, Finca Rebate & Salt and Pepper.
Given that the town is home to around 20,000 people (and growing) the bustling town centre of Pilar de la Horadada is also a shoppers paradise, filled with Boutique stores, pastry shops, banks, Salons, pharmacies, vet centres and schools, plus there’s a medical centre & a market on Friday mornings. There’s also plenty of bars and café’s, and if you wanted to go further afield, the Shopping Complex of La Zenia isn’t too far away either. Getting around is also nice and easy, if you don’t particularly want to travel by car everywhere, you can get a bus service to Torrevieja or Murcia, plus there’s local buses that can go to Pinar do Campoverde, Torre de la Horadada & Mil Palmeras.
We can’t talk about Pilar de La Horadada without also mentioning The Patron Saint’s Day, the Summer Fiestas and the Pilareña Holy Week, all of which are celebrated in style, with stalls, parades, music, flowers, fireworks and plenty of offerings.
Pilar de La Horadada is a fabulous place in which to settle down or have a holiday, with many international expats setting up communities here from the UK, Germany, France, Holland and Scandinavia.
