If you haven’t heard about the charming coastal town of Guardamar del Segura, then you are in for a bit of a treat, as we introduce you to one of the most popular resort towns on the Southern Costa Blanca. With it’s pristine Sandy Beaches (four of which are of Blue Flag Status), lush pine forests, wealth of amenities and cultural heritage it’s become a firm favourite for both tourists and expats wishing to take advantage of a more affordable and warmer lifestyle.
Located around 25km South of Alicante Airport, so easily accessible by Car, much of the surrounding landscape consists of the beautiful Pine Forest which consists of approx. 800 acres planted on the dunes bordering much of the 11km of sandy beaches. Add in the fact that the river Segura flows nearby, and you have a very diverse system allowing both the local wildlife and plants to flourish creating ideal opportunities for hiking, walking, cycling and running. As well as the outdoor activities prior mentioned, there’s also the La Marquesa Golf Club nearby – perfect for a round with friends or just to practise your overall game.
Guardamar Del Segura is probably best known for its 11km of beautiful beaches stretching a total of 2km to the North and 9km to the South. Els Tossals (Naturist Beach) is in the North, whilst in the South you have a choice of Els Vivers, Centre, La Babilonia, El Camp, La Roqueta, and El Montcaio. Of those, four have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Award and they are Els Vivers, Centre, La Roqueta and El Moncaio. The Blue Flag status is essentially given to Beaches, Marinas and Boat Tour Companies who can demonstrate that they meet the stringent environmental, safety and access requirements as set by the Foundation for Environmental Education which is headquartered in Copenhagen. It’s important to note that the Blue Flag is not a permanent guarantee, and beaches can have the status taken away from them if they fail in any one of the above requirements.
The town of Guardamar Del Segura also offers much to see and do in the form of Historical Sites, with Guardamar Castle, the remains of the Phoenician port and the Islamic Caliphate Rabita all worth visiting, plus, there’s the Archaeological Museum where you can discover the towns past along with its inhabitants. Other places to discover include the Sant Antoni Mill, the Dry River Waterwheel, The Old Nursery, The Forestry House and Saint James Church.
The town of Guardamar also boasts a well-established cuisine with many of the bars & restaurants lining the beach promenades, serving up fresh fish, seafood and Mediterranean style dishes. Local markets offer the chance to experience the many flavours of the region with fruits and vegetables, plus, there’s the Paella which shouldn’t be missed! Fish species include Grouper, Sea Bass, Flounder and Turbot whilst the area is especially proud of its Guardamar King Prawn. You’ll want to try the Guardamar Nyora too which is only found in this region and is a delightfully sweet Red Bell Pepper used in the Paella and other local dishes.
Much like the rest of Spain, Guardamar also has its cultural festivities which date back thousands of years, and continue to attract hundreds of people to watch and take part. These include the Patron Saints Festivities of Saint James and Our Lady of the Rosary, The Moors and Christians, Easter Holy Week, Saint John’s Bonfires, All Saints Day and Halloween, Christmas Time and the Grand Carnaval usually held in February. Generally, there’s also a full calendar of cultural events throughout the year too including free exhibitions & music concerts.
Finally, you can’t discuss the benefits of being in Guardamar, without at least mentioning the Marina and River Port, where you’ll find the Fish Market, with its morning auctions, and the Leisure centre with its wide range of water sports and regattas. Located right on the bank of the river, there’s also 116 berths for public use, just in case you need somewhere to keep your boat!
Whatever the reason for you looking at buying a home on the Costa Blanca South, Guardamar del Segura will offer you a captivating coastal experience, a warm Mediterranean Hospitality and the opportunity to enjoy the lifestyle which is synonymous with this region.
